The Importance of CRI in Sport and High Mast Lighting

Colour rendering is fundamental to achieving great lighting for your projects, yet it is often overlooked. Therefore, we will discuss what colour rendering is, how it can affect Sport and High Mast applications differently and how to best utilise it to optimise your site.

What is Colour Rendering?

The Colour Rendering Index (CRI) is the measurement of how accurately the colour of a subject is illuminated. It’s measured by a score of 0-100, with 100 being the most accurate in rendering colour as it would appear under natural light. The industry average CRI score is 80 or 90.

CRI is a consideration that must be made when designing any lighting solution, but when it comes to Sport and High Mast it sometimes needs a different approach.

High Mast Lighting

Sites that use high masts, such as ports demand a high CRI score to address safety concerns:

  • Visibility of Workers - The light needs to accurately render uniforms and any safety equipment they may be using. If the colour isn’t accurately illuminated, workers may be hard to spot in their surroundings, increasing the risk of accidents.
  • Signs and Safety Precautions – Workers need to be able to spot these easily, especially if they are colour-coded.

Sport Lighting

The importance of CRI in sport is similar to that of high masts and ports, with a few additional considerations:

  • Visual Clarity – Spectators want to see the detail and movements of what is happening on the pitch, and this is a necessity for players, as they need a clear view of the space and events unfolding around them.
  • Kit and Uniform Colour – These are not only for the clarity for spectators, but it is also a safety precaution, everybody on and around the pitch must be easily identified. The lighting shouldn’t be rendering other colours that could disrupt the event or training, or risk of safety being compromised.

Our luminaires are designed with a CRI of up to 90 as standard. We prioritise quality and performance above everything and want to achieve the best possible results on site.

We also have a skilled Lighting Design Team with many years of experience in designing these applications who utilise our products to create schemes that ensure you achieve the best results possible for your site.
